Incident report

On August 24, 1982, members of the Florida State University swim team were practicing in two water-filled sinkholes in Leon County, Florida. A 20 foot underwater tunnel links the two water holes. Kenneth Alan Eric Spence (19) swam through this tunnel twice. On a third attempt he drowned.

Incident analysis

According to the swim team captain the sinkhole 'is a place where veteran swim team members play a trick on newcomers. They disappear into the small hole in the ground and reappear in another hole.' That is, this foolishness was being promoted by veteran members of the swim team, who must therefore take partial responsibility.

Summary

Kenneth Alan Eric Spence drowned while attempting to swim through an underwater tunnel as part of a swim team initiation.
