Incident report

On June 25, Andy Franklin and one companion were on a sightseeing trip to Wolf River Cave. The group was exiting the cave, some 3 1/2 hours after entering, but was still 1/2 mile from the entrance, when Franklin snagged his coveralls on a breakdown block. His foot also became pinned so that, when he lost his balance and fell, his knee was severely sprained. The two made their way out, the victim sitting and sliding where possible or limping along with the injured leg held straight and being pulled up the numerous four foot ledges.

Incident analysis

Franklin feels that fatigue was not a factor but a slight head cold could have affected his sense of balance or his concentration. He was on crutches for more than a week following the incident.

Summary

Andy Franklin sprained his knee when his coveralls and foot got snagged on a breakdown block, causing him to lose balance and fall.
