Incident report

Dave Albert was taking photographs in Dynamited Cave when his strobe-flash unit exploded. A sharp explosion was heard, the case was split lengthwise, the lens and lamp-tube were blown forward, and the f/number calculator struck Albert on his hard hat and glasses frame. Prior to use, the unit had been carried in a sealed ammunition can for about an hour. The can also contained some used carbide, from which acetylene was still being produced. Apparently, the strobe unit developed an explosive gas mixture within its case which was ignited when the camera shutter. synced to the strobe, was tripped.

Analysis: Although no injury resulted, this incident is reported here because a repetition of the circumstances leading to the accident is very likely and the resulting danger of major eye injury is very great. As has been previously noted. fire is a major cave hazard.
